En cons\u00e9quence, une grande partie de la production de poivre d'Asie du Sud-Est a \u00e9t\u00e9 transf\u00e9r\u00e9e dans la province de Kampot. Le poivre de Kampot est devenu c\u00e9l\u00e8bre dans le monde entier. La r\u00e9gion connut un grand essor gr\u00e2ce au commerce florissant de cette \u00e9pice tr\u00e8s convoit\u00e9e. Sur la r\u00e9colte totale (8000 tonnes) de poivre de Kampot, la France importait \u00e0 elle seule 4130 tonnes. A l'\u00e9poque, le poivre de Kampot \u00e9tait utilis\u00e9 pour agr\u00e9menter le \"steak au poivre\" des gens qui se respectaient.<\/p>\n<p>En 1960, il y avait encore environ un million de plants de poivre \u00e0 Kampot. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur grande exp\u00e9rience et aux m\u00e9thodes de culture traditionnelles, les agriculteurs de la r\u00e9gion produisaient l'un des poivres les plus qualitatifs au monde. Dans les ann\u00e9es 1970, les Khmers rouges ont confisqu\u00e9 toutes les plantations pour les consacrer principalement \u00e0 la culture du riz. La culture du poivre de Kampot s'est alors presque arr\u00eat\u00e9e, a compl\u00e8tement disparu du march\u00e9 mondial et est presque tomb\u00e9e dans l'oubli.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but du 21e si\u00e8cle, apr\u00e8s plus de 30 ans, une plante de poivre retourn\u00e9e \u00e0 l'\u00e9tat sauvage a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 nouveau cultiv\u00e9e.
